I’d say that it was the moment I realised I was queer, but at that point, the word was barely in my vocabulary. It had never occurred to me that I could be anything other than 100% heterosexual.

Cue months of questioning, soul-searching and googling. I even re-watched The Bold Type, in which the “totally hetero” Kat is shocked to find herself falling for another woman.

IPSO’s new guidance on sex and gender met with mixed reaction from trans journalists

The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) has released new guidance on reporting on sex and gender, to mixed reaction from trans journalists.

The new guidance follows a four-week consultation period earlier in the year, which led to responses from the LGBTQ+ people, members of the public, charity workers and civil servants, and aims to take into account “nuanced and widely held views across society”.

The regulator said some respondents had noted the press coverage of the trans community was “disproportionate to the number of transgender individuals living in the UK” and believed misgendering happens all too often.

LGBTQ+ representation on the pitch and in sports journalism at the Women’s World Cup

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is well underway in Australia and New Zealand, with one sports journalist describing how cultural sensitivity is key to exploring LGBTQ+ topics at the tournament.

The World Cup kicked off on 20 July and boasts a record number of publicly out LGBTQ+ athletes according to Outsports, with at least 95 queer players – nearly 13 per cent of all the athletes competing – taking to football’s biggest stage.

With the sheer number of LGBTQ+ athletes taking part, discussions around inclusion, representation, equality and wider human rights are not far removed from the actual football.
